What is a construction hat?
A construction helmet, or "hard hat," is a protective hat worn on worksites to protect the head from injuries from falling objects, collisions, bumps, scrapes, or hazardous electrical shocks. Construction safety helmets can also save the head from UV radiation, rain, and falling debris of all kinds.
What is the OSHA standard for hard hats?
Section 1926.100(a) provides:
Employees working in areas where there is a possible danger of head injury from impact, or from flying objects, or from electrical shock and electrical burns, shall be protected by protective helmets.
Section 1926.100(b) provides:
Helmets for the protection of employees against impact and penetration of falling and flying objects shall meet the specifications contained in American National Standards Institute, Z89.1-1969, Safety Requirements for Industrial Head Protection.
ANSI Z89.1 defines two types of hard hats. It establishes three classes of hard hats based on the level of electrical hazard protection provided.
Hard Hat Types:
There are two types of hard hat helmets defined by the head area that is protected.
- Type I: Protects the top of the head and is commonly used in the United States
- Type II: Protects the top and sides of the head and is more commonly used in Europe
Hard Hat Classes:
The three classes are based on the protection they provide from electrical hazards.
- Class G (General) construction safety helmets are rated at 2,200 volts
- Class E (Electrical) construction safety helmets are rated at 20,000 volts
- Class C (Conductive) construction safety helmets do not offer electrical protection

Construction safety helmets must be replaced if they have been damaged. Due to rough treatment, replace your hard hats with dents, cracks, penetration, or fatigue. Some damage may not be visible; test your hard hat by grasping it in two hands and applying force by squeezing the hat. If you hear creaking or other unusual sounds, it is time to replace the hard hat helmet.
