The Barska AE11124 could be a reasonable starting telescope for an adult beginner — it’s inexpensive, simple to use, and can give you a first glimpse of the Moon, bright stars, and some constellations.

Can I see a .308 hole at 500 yards ?

No, you will not and it is going to be extremely difficult to see bullet holes at those distances without a very high quality spotting scope and hi-viz targets.
